Google Analytics Filters are very useful to filter out certain things to your website. Filters in Google Analytics used by Views to divide the data into smaller groups. Filters can be used to include some specific subsets of data, exclude the unwanted data or to search and replace the certain piece of information.
By default Google doesn’t apply filters to Google analytics data. It might be sad as you may want to filter out certain traffic. For example: you may want to filter out some visits or traffic to your website, or visits that come from the countries outside of where you do business.

What is Google Analytics Views?

A view or reporting view is a part of an Analytics account domain that can have its own unique pattern settings. In another words, a view is a set of specifications for tracking traffic on a single domain. Analytics automatically generates one unfiltered view for each property or domain in your account, but you can create more than one view on a single property and configure each view to show a different subset of data for the property. You can use filters to customize views and see only a subset of data in your reports. You can Access, Customize, and Analyze your data in a view. Analytics shows reports for one view at a time.

You can set up multiple views for a single domain. For example, if you were setting up views to track "," you might want:
• One view for traffic to
• One view for U.S. visitors
• One view whose reports can be viewed only by certain people

Recommended Views:

Unfiltered View – Google Analytics by default automatically creates the unfiltered view. “Do Not Delete” defined to maintain your raw data intact. This view is there to make sure if something unpredicted happens to the data at least you have an endorsement or backup saved somewhere. You should never add any filters to this view.

Main View – This view is use for reporting on a regular basis. Call it whatever you like, but make sure it’s communicated to your team or group which view should be used for reporting.

Test View – Firstly apply your filters in this “Test View”. It is suggested that you apply your new filters to a Test View first and let them run for a couple of days, to have enough time to verify the credibility of the results. If you have not already created and defined a “Test View”, it is a good time to create one now; your Test View should use the similar correct settings as your “Main View” that you would normally use for your reporting purposes. If everything looks good after a few days, then apply to your Main View.

Naming rule or conventions for Views

If you have numerous more than one websites, clients, companies, etc. you should use a naming convention for your views to make sure you can recognize or identify each view at a peek. Steps to add new view?

You can add up to 25 views to a property. And you need edit permission to add views. To setup a view:

1. Sign in to Google Analytics.
2. Click Admin, and navigate to the account and property to which you want to add the view.
3. In the VIEW column, click the menu under view profile, and then click Create new view.
4. Select either Web Site or Mobile App (If you are an app creator and want to track your app data then you can select mobile app.)
5. Enter a Name: - (Use a specific and descriptive name, so you can easily tell what data is in this view when you see the name in a list.)
6. Choose the Reporting Time Zone: - If your Analytics account is associated to a Google AdWords account, the time zone is automatically set to your AdWords preference, and you won’t see this option.
7. For User ID permit Properties only: - Click on the toggle ON to generate a User ID view. For a reporting view, leave the toggle set to OFF.
8. Click Create View.
After you create a view, you can come back to the Admin page and edit the view settings.

Creating New Filters

Filters can be created at either the Account or the View level. It is a best practice to create all the filters at the Account level, and then assign them to different views.
You can create filters at two levels one is the account level, and then apply them to one or more views. And second is you can create filters at the view level that apply only to that view, and you can manage account-level filters that have been applied to the view.

Create a filter at the account level

1. Sign in to Google Analytics.
2. Click Admin, and navigate to the account in which you want to create the filter.
3. In the ACCOUNT column, click All Filters.
4. Click + New Filter. (If this button is not visible, you do not have the necessary permission.)
5. Select Create new Filter.
6. Enter a name for the filter.
7. Select Predefined filter to select from the predefined filter types.
8. Choose Custom filter to build a custom filter with various the options like include, exclude, lowercase and uppercase etc.
9. From the Available views list, select the views to which you want to apply the filter and then click Add.
10. Click Save.

By default, view filters are applied to the data in which the filters were added. So, if there are accessible or existing filters for a view, your new filter is applied after them.

Create a filter at the view level

1. Sign in to Google Analytics.
2. Click on the Admin, and navigate to the view in which you desire to create the filter.
3. In the VIEW column, click Filters.
4. Click + New Filter. (If this button is not able to be seen or visible, you do not have the compulsory permission.)
5. Select Create new Filter.
6. Enter a name for the filter.
7. Select Predefined filter to select from the predefined filter types.
8. Select Custom filter to construct a custom filter from the options.
9. From the Available views list, select the views to which you want to apply the filter and then click Add.
10. Click Save.

Follow the information to change the filter order for a view, below:
Follow the first three steps which are given as above in the vise level then the fourth step is:

4. Click Assign Filter Order, select the filter you want to move, then click Move up or Move down. Click Save when you are finished.
5. If you want to remove a filter from the view, click remove in the row for that filter.

Add existing filters to or remove them from a view

Follow the first three step same as above:

4. Then Click + New Filter.
5. Select Apply existing Filter.
6. Add or remove the filters as necessary.
7. Click Save.

There are two types of filters:

1. Exclude Filter: This filter is used to exclude the internal traffic of your website. For example: If your website is of Australia and the traffic over your website if from more than one countries included India and you don’t want show the traffic coming from India on your website traffic results. So, you can Exclude India from the list by using the exclude filter.

2. Include Filter: This filter is used to include the data or traffic of a specific countries to which you want to show on your website traffic results. For example: The traffic on your website is coming from different countries but you want to show just the traffic coming from USA So, by using Include filter you can include USA only traffic on your website.

3. Lowercase / Uppercase: This is used to convert the contents or data into all uppercase or all lowercase characters. These filters only affect letters, and do not affect special characters or numbers.

4. Search & Replace: This is a simple and easy filter which is used to search for a pattern within a field and replace the found pattern with an alternate form.

5. Advanced Filter: This type of filter allows you to construct a field from one or two other fields. The filtering engine applies the expressions in the two Extract fields to the specified fields and then constructs a third field using the Constructor expression.
